Thanks Volley;ls650v;David K;Bob;and Paul for your thoughtfulness and insight into my problem. Now for the good news... I fired it up last night after getting it back together, took it for a short spin around my test loop and WOWEEEE what a difference. The low end was still strong as ever and it was still climbing past 70mph when I shifted from 4th into 5th. I shut it off when it passed 80mph and still climbing strong. Deer here in Kansas are thick at night so I didn't want to push my luck that late at nite and headed home, satisfied that the bike is now a keeper. Don't know yet what the top end speed is but at this point don't really care. For my needs and type of riding this is enough for me. Now... let me tell you what I did. As was suggested, I did everything you guys mentioned, so I cannot isolate which fix was the one but they all seem to work together well and neither takes a lot of time in and of itself. First, I checked the airbox to ensure that the filter was clean and it had no restriction(no mice);next I cleaned the carb slide with gumout spray carb and choke cleaner (the slide was black with what appeared to be baked on carbon). The inside of the carb seemed quite smooth and clean so I did nothing to it. After getting it back together from the top, I took my now well used 10mm wrench and removed the brass plug on the underside of the carb float bowl to drain the gas and with it any `carb critters' (I love that term) that may be residing therein. With the plug back in place, remember to prime the carb on start up because it's dry. Well, that's essentially the play by play. Again, guys....many thanks! As an addendum to this, my thought now is to put in a teaspoon full of gumout in every tankfull of gas to prevent the carb slide problem in the future. Couldn't hurt! Richard
